Trial Work Experience

The purpose of the trial work experience is to determine:

• The Physical, Mental, and/or Vocational Potential of the Individual
• The Feasibility and Necessity for Placement in Competitive Employment
• Realistic Vocational Objectives
• Vocational Strengths and Weaknesses

A vocational specialist will have the client participate in situational assessments and work samples to help assess the client’s vocational interests, skills, and abilities.

The general criteria for determining client’s success include:

• Attendance expectations
• Punctuality expectations
• Productivity expectations
• Behavioral expectations
• Work performance

Once the client completes the trial work experience, the specialist will determine the next appropriate step which can include job placement or a recommendation for other services.

Admission Criteria

The purpose of the trial work experience is to determine:

• The client has a physical, mental, or emotional handicap, which prevents the client from obtaining employment in the community.
• The client is at least sixteen-years-old and can take care of his or her personal living needs.
• The disability condition is stable and documented by a professional such as a doctor or psychiatrist.
• The client has sufficient control of his or her behavior so as to not endanger themselves or others.

If a client is not seeking supportive services, such as counseling, upon applying for job training, a recommendation for services may be made.

Vocational Rehabilitation

Vocational Rehabilitation is one funding source that often sponsors a client in the vocational programs. It is the client’s responsibility to contact his or her V.R. Counselor to set up a meeting to determine eligibility into the program.
